Scope
Syncon constructed a three-story high-bay addition at Norfolk Naval Air Station for the P-518 MH-60 Helicopter Training Facility to support the MH-60 Navy helicopter squadron’s mission readiness. The 11,500 square foot facility houses two advanced full-motion MH-60R/S tactical operational flight trainers (TOFTs) to reduce flight hours while maintaining operational sustainment. The project included structural steel framing, connections to existing building systems, and site improvements within a constrained operational airwing facility.
Challenges
Building the high-bay structure to accommodate the complex TOFT simulators, each requiring precise structural and environmental controls, posed significant challenges. Integrating the addition with the existing structure’s mechanical, electrical, and fire protection systems was intricate. The tight footprint and active naval airwing operations demanded meticulous scheduling to avoid disruptions, while meeting stringent Navy standards added complexity.
Solution
Syncon deployed highly skilled subcontractor teams and tradesmen to collaborate closely with the project team, ensuring seamless integration of the new structure. Advanced planning and phased scheduling minimized operational impacts, while robust steel framing and precise system connections supported the simulators’ requirements. This approach delivered a state-of-the-art training facility on time, enhancing squadron readiness.
