ODU – Village Bookstore

Scope
3 story concrete and structural steel structure with first floor bookstore and escalator to 2nd and 3rd floor administrative offices and conference rooms. The design team was Tymoff + Moss and built by another large GC firm. Chris Brandt (Syncon Business Development) was the Executive Vice President at another large GC firm during the entire design and construction.
Challenge
The challenge for this project was the presence of primary conduits of internet cabling running from a key offsite substation to downtown Norfolk. There was no actual known location of the conduits, so every time a shovel was put in the ground, there had to be the use of ground penetrating radar. Despite our best efforts, we did “accidentally locate” the outside edge of a concrete encased duct bank of cables without breaking any of the connections.
Solution
The resolution was that the team carefully excavated around the ductbank and successfully constructed the required structural foundations for the building around the duct bank.
