Scope
The project was designed by Speight Marshall Francis and built by another large GC firm. Chris Brandt (Syncon Business Development) was the Executive Vice President for another large GC firm during the entire design and construction) – 9-story poured in place concrete structure housing 54 Condominiums. Scope of work included “straightening” the “leaning” concrete structure by 9″.
Challenge
The challenge of this project was that the process was the first of it’s kind and took approximately 9 months to complete and included new foundation piles, footings, and pile caps. The system used to straighten the building was hundreds of very large hydraulic jacks installed below the existing column footings and operated by an extremely large hydraulic pump system. There was no standard to compare the work against and the structural engineer had to initially design the complex structural sequence of events and then readjust as the “straightening” process required.
Solution
Once the straightening process began, it could not be stopped, which created the need for multiple subcontractor trade expertise to be present during the entire procedure. The result was a 100% successful straightening of the required 9″ “lean” in the 9-story building.
